Monuments
composed in 2007 - for horn and piano

Monuments was my firs experience writing for the horn as a solo instrument. As such, the work is in many ways experimental, working through different textures and types of music. The outer movements share some thematic material and a mournful character. The inner movements are highly contrasting, with the first being propulsive and rhythmic and the second being static and atmospheric.

The “monument” movements were created with past composers in mind; the first is to Ligeti, the second to Berio. Influences from these composers’ music are at the core of each movement.

Prelude: Dirge (listen to the movement)
First Monument: Rusting Megaliths
Second Monument: Eventide Gate (listen to an excerpt)
Postlude: Midnight
