mantra-meditation
composed in 2006 - for flute and piano

Initially part of a larger work for flute and piano, mantra-meditation was taken out to stand on its own. The title refers to the two alternating musical elements that govern the majority of the work.

The “mantra” is defined by its motivic material, growing more elaborate each time; the “meditation” is characterized by rocking chords in the piano and improvisatory lines in the flute. The two switch back and forth and tension builds; resolution is only provided by the intervention of an outside element, a delicate melody heard in the high register of the piano.

mantra-meditation was composed for and premiered by flutist Emily McKay. It was also performed at the Music07 festival, hosted by the University of Cincinnati.
