Hover was composed as part of the 2007 Hammer & Nail project, in collaboration with choreographer Selene Carter. Selene’s free, gentle choreography demanded a subtle piece of music that could share the spotlight.
The piano is largely static harmonically, while the two strings gradually drift away to more and more distant pitch centers. The piece culminates with the piano taking the melodic role and the string receding to the background.
The still moments in the music don’t always correspond with still moments in the dance; the result is that one’s attention becomes focused on the music when the dance is still, and vice versa.
