8BIT_CHACONNE was written for fun. After a long time spent studying for my doctoral oral exams in the fall of 2009, I was eager to write music again. I wanted to put out a finished product quickly, and so in a couple days, I put together 8BIT_CHACONNE using simple audio software and samples from the Magical 8bit Plug.
People of a certain age have an inherent love of what is now called “chiptune” music, fueled by nostalgia for childhoods spent with the NES and the lo-fi charm of that system’s music. I am of that age, and unabashedly adore 8-bit sounds, so putting together something like this is simply too much fun to stay away from. The form and textures are simple. And strictly speaking, it is probably not a chaconne, but it does have a very limited harmonic vocabulary.
